Er gingen al eerder geruchten rond dat SoundCloud overgenomen zou worden door Twitter. Toch werden deze geruchten nooit bevestigd. Dit betekent echter niet dat de twee giganten niet samenwerken. Integendeel: er is wel bevestigd dat Twitter maar liefst $70 miljoen USD investeert in de muziek-streamings site. In the end moet dit bedrag oplopen naar $100 miljoen USD.

This investment will enable SoundCloud to remain focused on building value for creators and listeners alike, and to continue the global rollout of many company initiatives such as our recently launched subscription service, SoundCloud Go.”
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey bevestigde de deal ook:
Earlier this year we made an investment in SoundCloud through Twitter Ventures to help support some of our efforts with creators. They’ve been great partners of ours over the years and their community-supported approach mirrors ours in many ways.
Een interessante zet in een interessant tijdsbestek. Niet alleen omdat Twitter een kleine teloorgang beleefde, maar ook omdat de waarde van SoundCloud gestagneerd zou zijn. Gaan ze elkaar erbovenop helpen?
