En omdat ze bij Reddit (uweetwel) niet de moeilijkste zijn , delen ze maar 10% van de funding met hun gebruikers. Wat is het verhaal? De populaire uploadsite heeft zojuist zo’n $50 miljoen met een waarde van $500 miljoen opgehaald van een aantal investeerders. Hierdoor kan Reddit blijven voortzetten met wat ze al deden zonder de advertenties. Onder de investeerders zaten beroemdheden Snoop Dogg (die erg actief is), Jared Leto, PayPal oprichter Peter Thiel én Gmail ontwikkelaar Paul Buchheit.
De investeerders hebben beloofd dat 10% van het opgehaalde geld gedeeld zal worden met de community members. Hoe ze dit precies willen gaan doen is nog onbekend, maar wellicht zal Reddit haar eigen betaalmiddel introduceren (Bitcoin 2.0?).
“I went through YC the same class as Reddit, and so I was one of the first dozen or so users,” zegt Sam Altman van Y Combinator, die de leiding had over de financiering. “My thought at the time was these community sites should own themselves. For years I couldn’t think of a great way to do that. The block chain came along and I thought, huh, this might the biggest evolution of corporate structure since the limited-liability corporation. So we don’t know exactly how it will work yet, but all the investors are committed to allocating these shares to the community if we can find a way to make it work.”
Reddit CEO Yishan Wong sprak over de investering op zijn blog “An investment like this doesn’t mean we’re rich or successful … Money can become worthless very quickly, value is something that is built over time through hard work.”
